WHAT ARE SECURITY LICENCES?

Security licences allow you to work legally in various security-related occupations throughout Alberta. These jobs include:

HOW TO APPLY FOR A SECURITY LICENCE

At Registry @ South Trail Crossing Ltd., we understand the urgency of receiving your security licence. We process applications the same day and provide a temporary licence that allows you to start working immediately, while the physical licence is mailed within 60 days.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The following security licences are valid for two years. Please note the prices below do not include the $9 service charge when you apply in-person.

• Security licence: $100

• Locksmith licence: $160

• Investigator licence: $160

 

These security licences are portable, which means your licence is still valid if you change employers or work for multiple employers.

WHEN CAN YOU RENEW YOUR SECURITY LICENCE?

To ensure your security licence remains valid and uninterrupted, you can renew it as early as 60 days before the expiry date. If your security licence is expired for more than three months, you must complete a first application. We're here to assist you with the renewal process, making it a hassle-free experience.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR SECURITY LICENCES

To be eligible to apply for a security, locksmith or investigator licence you must:

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada

• Be fluent in the English language

• Provide a Criminal Record Check that is clear of any findings

• Provide a valid, government-issued photo identification

​

You must also provide proof that you completed an approved security training course and attained a score of 80 per cent or higher on the provincial final exam. You’re also eligible to apply if you have a valid security licence from another Canadian province or territory. Visit the Government of Alberta website to determine your eligibility.
